Cloud Busting

Cloud Busting.

An incredible story of friendship written in verse.

Written by Malorie Blackman, the book is narrated by Sam and begins when he is set a poetry homework task by Mr Mackle. The book is completely written in verses. The forms used are haikus, blank verse, limericks, and shape poems. The simple vocabulary, along with occasional use of slang, helps to draw in readers who may not usually enjoy poetry.

The story follows Sam’s developing friendship with Davey. Their relationship is at the heart of the book, showing how friendship can grow in unexpected ways, even between very different people.

The book is particularly well-suited for Year 5 and above as it gently introduces important themes such as bullying, individuality, and self-perception. Davey is portrayed as a unique character who does not fit in with others’ expectations, and, through Sam’s shifting perspective, readers are encouraged to reflect on how people are often misunderstood. This helps children consider identity, difference, and the importance of looking beyond appearances.

There is one key event in the story (chapter 16) that is engaging and emotional, as it significantly changes the experiences and perspectives of the characters.
